What it is

Dermal fillers are gels made of hyaluronic acid — a sugar molecule your body already produces — placed in specific tissue planes to restore volume, support structure, or refine contour.

Different filler products have different thicknesses and produce different results. What sits well along a jawline is not what belongs in a tear trough. This matters, because a single syringe cannot fix everything — a large part of the skill is choosing the right product, for the right location, to get the right result.

How I approach it

As we age, faces lose volume in a predictable pattern. Recognising those changes — and how they are affecting your particular anatomy — is what determines the plan. It often means treating somewhere other than the area that first bothered you, because that is where the change actually began.

Every dermal filler appointment starts with a consultation. I assess the whole face before deciding where a syringe, or more than one, should go. I will also be honest with you if I don’t think the result you’re after is achievable with filler.

When I inject, I often use a combination of needle and cannula. That lets me work in the layer each area calls for, as safely and precisely as possible.

Areas I treat

Assessed individually — what you need depends on where volume has been lost, not on a standard list.

  • Temples
  • Cheeks
  • Tear trough
  • Jawline
  • Chin
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Perioral lines
  • Lips

What to expect

Timing

Immediate effect, settling over about a month. Lasts 6–18 months depending on the product and the area.

Recovery time

Swelling and bruising are normal for several days. Plan around events.

Reversible

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. That is a real safety advantage.

Lip treatment has its own page — see Swedish Lips for the cannula technique I trained in with Dr. Rebecka Gardell.

What to do once you leave. These are the same instructions I hand you in clinic.

You'll see some effect immediately. Full results settle at about 1 month, and last 6–18 months depending on the product used.

Common side effects

Swelling, bruising, redness, mild pain, itching and tenderness at the injection sites. Frequent icing or cooling over the first few days will reduce bruising and swelling.

For 24 hours

  • Avoid sun and heat exposure
  • No strenuous activity, hot tubs, saunas or facials
  • No alcohol, Advil or Aspirin — Tylenol is fine
  • No actives: AHAs, retinols or vitamin C
  • No makeup until the following day
  • Keep salt intake down

For 5–7 days

  • Don't sleep on the treated areas; sleep on an incline if you can
  • Antihistamines are fine and may help with swelling
  • Do not massage the injection sites

Before other treatments

  • Wait 4 weeks after filler before laser or microneedling

Call the clinic immediately on 204-416-5433 if you notice white or dusky grey discolouration at the treatment area, severe or increasing pain, blistering, fever or chills. These are uncommon, but they need to be seen straight away — don't wait to see if they settle.

What it costs

Hyaluronic acid dermal filler is $600 per syringe, plus GST. How many syringes you need is discussed and agreed before treatment.
